Value Judgements, Positivism and Utility Comparisons in Economics

Abstract The issue of interpersonal comparisons utility is about the possibility (or not) comparing or welfare mental states in general, different individuals. Embedded conceptual framework utilitarianism, were admissible economics as part theoretical justification policies until first decades twentieth century. Under strong influence scientific philosophy positivism reflected works early neoclassical economists and epitomized by Lionel Robbins, subsequently rejected a value judgement. Robbins’ methodological stance still prevalent among mainstream economists. Despite explicit rejection comparability majority economists, are necessary for many key policy issues, such progressive taxation, social policies, GDP-based comparisons, cost–benefit analysis, public goods provision. In this paper, case discussed an illustrative example usefulness study role judgements, generally interrelationship between ethics economics.
